Tom Hiddleston and Hugh Laurie to Star in John le Carre’s The Night Manager

It’s going to be a Hiddles in the House co-production as Tom Hiddleston and Hugh Laurie are tapped to star in a limited series adaptation of John le Carre’s 1993 espionage thriller, “The Night Manager”!

Hiddles n House

Hiddles n House

The series will air on BBC in the U.K. and, I imagine, it’s only a matter of time before a bidding war begins amongst US networks! Looks like a ratings winner to me!

It seems I need extra staff members to keep up  with Hiddles career, which is on fire these days! The Avenger‘s star recently wrapped Guillermo del Toro‘s “Crimson Peak” and is now getting his ‘twang on’ as Country Music legend, Hank Williams in “I Saw The Light” not to mention the recently announced “Skull Island” about King Kong’s origins! Where does he find the time? Not that I’m complaining…the more Hiddles to love, the better!

The Night Manager is an espionage/detective novel published in 1993. It is le Carre’s first post-Cold War novel, detailing an undercover operation to nab an international criminal. The story follows Jonathan Pine, a former British soldier turned night auditor for a luxurious hotel. One night, Pine encounters Sophie, a French-Arab woman who has ties to Richard Onslow Roper, an English black marketeer who has made a fortune from the sale of weapons. Sophie provides Pine with incriminating documents, which Pine forwards to a friend in British intelligence. Despite Pine’s best efforts to help her, Sophie’s betrayal is discovered and she is subsequently murdered. Pine then goes undercover to avenge Sophie’s death. That’s a lot of story to tell in a limited series!

“The Night Manager” will mark the Emmy Award winning Laurie’s return to television after a hugely successful run on Fox’s “House”.  This will be Hiddles largest TV role to date, with previous appearances being in British black comedy Suburban Shootout, Wallander..and my personal favorite Return to Cranford. (Ohh the blonde curls!)

Laurie is repped by WME, the U.K.’s Hamilton Hodell and Ziffren Brittenham and Hiddles is with WME, the U.K.’s Hamilton Hodell, Authentic Talent and Literary, and Peikoff Mahan. That’s got to be ONE happy group of talent representatives.

Richard Armitage Takes The Lead Role in Elliott Lester’s Psychological Thriller, “Sleepwalker”

Fresh off his critically acclaimed performance in Arthur Miller’s The Crucible and just before he’s about to embark on a worldwide press tour for Peter Jackson‘s highly anticipated, The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies, Richard Armitage has decided not to sit around sipping tea and reading books, but instead has signed on to star in the indie psychological thriller, “Sleepwalker” to be directed by Elliott Lester.

ArmitageBlue

Let no moss grow under this man’s feet!

Joining Armitage will be Screen Actors Guild Award winner, Ahna O’Reilly who gave us the heartbreaking and unforgettable performance as Elizabeth Leefolt in Tate Taylor‘s The Help.

In a script written by Jack Olsen, Sleepwalker, centers around Sarah (O’Reilly) who’s trying to reconstruct her life following the apparent suicide of her novelist husband. After returning to university, to finish her dissertation, Sarah experiences frequent bouts of sleepwalking. She is sent to Dr. Scott White’s (Armitage) sleep research lab for treatment.  When Sarah’s life starts to alternate between her waking world and a nightmarish alternate reality, where no one recognizes that she has ever existed, she is plunged into chaos, confusion and terror.  The one constant in her shifting world is Scott, the man she’s been longing for all her life.  But does Sarah’s true love actually exist, or is it a figment of Sarah’s troubled imagination that derives from wishful thinking and longing? (I think I had a dream like this once…)

Dr. White character is described as handsome, open and honest  (Gee, I wonder how they thought of Armitage?) He’s the senior M.D. at the sleep research center where Sarah comes for treatment. A unique relationship forms between them but the film promises such shocking twists and turns…that nobody will see them coming!

It sounds absolutely thrilling and incredibly intense to me. But for Armitage, who just spent the last several months delivering the most captivatingly gut-wrenching performance as John Proctor at The Old Vic Theatre in London….Dr. White might be a walk in the park for him.

Filming for Sleepwalker began in Los Angeles on October 1st which means the cast should be enjoying sunshine and weather in the high 80’s…unless all the scenes take place at the sleep lab. Still, wear your sunscreen! (By the way, I recommend Shutters on The Beach for drinks and Sunday brunch at The Ivy at The Shore.)

No release date has been set as of yet but the Armitage Army need not fret as Richard will soon grace the screens for one last time as Thorin Oakenshield when the final Hobbit movie opens nationwide on December 17th, 2014 (bring you tissues!) And, there is still the promise of The Crucible, currently in post production, to be released by Digital Theatre…not to mention his recently wrapped film, Urban and the Shed Crew directed by Candida Brady. So there shall be plenty of Armitage to go around for everyone…and just in time for Christmas too!

Sleepwalker Executive Producers are: Sharon Bordas, Hannah Pillimer
Producers: Michael Roiff, Jennifer Glynn
Director: Elliott Lester
Writer:  Jack Olsen

A Visit With BAFTA/Emmy Award Winning Costume Designer Andrea Galer

The Anglophile Channel was delighted to visit with BAFTA/Emmy Award winning Costume Designer, Andrea Galer, best known for her timeless creations in such classic British period dramas as: Mansfield Mark, Persuasion, Jane Eyre, Miss Austen Regrets and much more.

Ms. Galer was gracious enough to invite us into her studios in London where we enjoyed a lovely afternoon chat and tour of her inspirational design haven.

Andrea hails from Cambridge, Cambridgeshire, England and comes from a family of “makers”. She says she was always around creativity and, having craft skills was a common talent in her household.

One of Andrea’s earliest films was as the costume designer for the British cult classic movie, Withnail & I  starring Richard E. Grant. The iconic coat worn by Grant in the film was woven by the weavers of Harris Tweed and is now available for special order purchase…a ‘must have’ for most Withnail aficionados! Fans will also be delighted to know that the film is enjoying a limited re-release of a newly restored version.

But it has been Andrea’s passion and talent for fashion across historical periods that has gained her the most notoriety. Ms. Galer won a BAFTA in 2006 for Bleak House starring Carey Mulligan, Anna Maxwell Martin and Gillian Anderson, and an EMMY AWARD in 2007 for Jane Eyre starring Ruth Wilson. Jane Austen fans will also recognize her period designs from recent favorites, Persuasion starring Academy Award nominee Sally Hawkins and the dashing Rupert Penry-Jones and, Mansfield Park with Frances O’Connor.

During our tour of Andrea’s studio, she decided to surprise our little Anglophile, Miss Juliette Boland, when she had her model an actual costume used in the BBC production of Jane Eyre. A dream come true for Juliette!

Andrea’s costumes have enjoyed exhibitions at many iconic heritage houses and estates around England in an effort to share her years of dedication and research of how fashion, crafts and lifestyle affected the times.

Andrea currently has a full slate of projects on the horizon with her most recent accomplishment being designing the costume for the new Jane Austen wax sculpture which made its worldwide debut on July 9th, 2014 at The Jane Austen Centre in Bath.

With no “acceptable likeness” FBI-trained forensic artist Malissa Dring  firstly produced a sketch. Mark Richards created the sculpture of Jane Austen. Andrea designed the outfit, the fabric chosen was produced by Andrea from Barbara Johnson’s famous ledger of style and fabrics. Andrea connects this project to THREADS OF TIME which she also spoke to us at length.

The Threads of Time project began in 2012 when Rupert Penry Jones was  photographed at Waterloo studios. A series of “The Girl In The Red Dress” videos have followed with each leading the viewer from Andrea’s studios and links to locations around the world in an effort to understand the importance of textiles and  ‘Why what we wear matters’

The Anglophile Channel was honored to have the opportunity to film our contribution to the “Threads of Time” effort starring our very own Anglophile Channel team member, Elyse Ashton. You can watch the video at the end of our interview.

We hope you enjoy our interview with Andrea Galer and the premiere of “The Girl in The Red Dress” filmed at The St. Pancras Renaissance London Hotel.

Sir Anthony Hopkins is to appear opposite his fellow knight Sir Ian McKellen in a new BBC version of Sir Ronald Harwood’s The Dresser!

Two "Sirs" to star in The Dresser

Two “Sirs” to star in The Dresser

The Telegraph revealed today that BBC has pulled off a real ‘casting coup’ as they snagged two of Britain’s most illustrious thespians to appear in new film production of  Sir Ronald Harwood’s “The Dresser”.  According to The Telegraph, McKellen will play “the camp dresser to Hopkins’s domineering actor-manager, who is known only as “Sir”.  Harwood is said to have based the play on his own experience as a dresser to Sir Donald Wolfit.

“This is our emphatic answer to all those people who say that the BBC is no longer interested in serious drama,” a source told the publication. “The negotiatons between the key players have taken some time, but now it’s a done deal. We are absolutely thrilled.”

BBC has not yet confirmed the casting announcement.

First Look at Benedict Cumberbatch as Richard III

Now is the winter of our discontent
Made glorious summer by this sun of York…

And, even more glorious at the sight of Benedict Cumberbatch perched atop his valiant steed all decked out as King Richard III, the last king of the House of York, as principal photography begins on The Hollow Crown: The Wars Of The Roses, a Neal Street co-production with Carnival/NBCUniversal and Thirteen for BBC Two, filming in locations around the UK.

BBC also revealed that Andrew Scott — who plays  Cumberbatch’s  Sherlock  nemesis, Moriarty — would be joining the cast as King Louis, alongside others including Michael Gambon, Philip Glenister and Jason Watkins.

Following an outstanding critical and audience reaction to the BAFTA Award-winning The Hollow Crown series in 2012, Neal Street Productions and Carnival Films/NBCUniversal bring the concluding part of this ambitious cycle of Shakespeare’s History plays to the screen in three further filmed adaptations, Henry VI (in 2 parts) and Richard III.

Yet again we have assembled an amazing cast – led by Benedict Cumberbatch, Judi Dench, Hugh Bonneville, and Sophie Okenedo, amongst many others – under the direction of the hugely talented Dominic Cooke. I’m very excited indeed to see them all bring the rest of this astonishing story to life.”

Dominic Cook‎e (former Artistic Director of The Royal Court theatre) will make his TV directorial debut with the three films. Ben Power (Associate Director of The National Theatre), who previously wrote the screenplays for Richard II and Henry V, has adapted the cycle for the screen. A Message From The Queen Following The Scottish Referendum Result

Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II released the following statement today:

After many months of discussion, debate, and careful thought, we now know the outcome of the Referendum, and it is a result that all of us throughout the United Kingdom will respect.

For many in Scotland and elsewhere today, there will be strong feelings and contrasting emotions – among family, friends and neighbours. That, of course, is the nature of the robust democratic tradition we enjoy in this country. But I have no doubt that these emotions will be tempered by an understanding of the feelings of others.

Now, as we move forward, we should remember that despite the range of views that have been expressed, we have in common an enduring love of Scotland, which is one of the things that helps to unite us all. Knowing the people of Scotland as I do, I have no doubt that Scots, like others throughout the United Kingdom, are able to express strongly-held opinions before coming together again in a spirit of mutual respect and support, to work constructively for the future of Scotland and indeed all parts of this country.

My family and I will do all we can to help and support you in this important task.
