On Pleasure Bent Again: British Airways Club World Rhapsody

For the record, British Airways isn’t paying me. They are not (yet!)sponsors of The Anglophile Channel. They haven’t promised me an upgrade. I am a budget traveler and careful with my spending.

piggy bank

Save your pennies!

What’s well worth some extravagance? For what do I curtail my spending and save those dollars? What is worth putting every blessed cent I spend on certain credit cards and amassing as many points as possible? For what do I seek when I read every airline email? Business class. British Airways Club World. Oh, yes. A thousand times, yes!

seats

The only way to fly….

Many years ago, my husband and I splurged for British Airways Premium Economy. It gave my wiggly husband some extra legroom and me, some peace. He sat on my left and a nice mother-daughter pair on my right. That child had the worst smelling feet I’ve ever been unfortunate enough to experience. The gag-worthy aroma hung in the air. It was going to be a long, horrible, smelly flight. The child’s mother apologized in advance for the fragrant hours that lay ahead of us.

foot

Instruments of torture.  Who knew?

Robert, the aforementioned wiggly husband, overheard a man nearby asking to upgrade to business. Robert got up to check out that Club World cabin and came back with an odd expression on his face. It was as if he had seen the promised land. He counted several empty seats, so he asked the steward if it were possible for us to upgrade as well, and how much would it cost? The steward, who is forever our hero, upgraded us, pretended to but didn’t charge our BA credit card, and ushered us into paradise. He knew that once we spent time in that cabin, we would not be content to fly with the mortals in steerage again.

The Club World Cabin

Now we are loyal Club World passengers. We used to dread the actual travel. It was stressful and squashed and we didn’t feel like the vacation began until we got to the hotel. But now we fly Club World. We still have the queues, the security and the madness of getting to and checking in at LAX, but the whole experience changes once we get to the lounge. Ah, yes, the lounge is where the holiday begins in earnest.

BA2

Club World Lounge at Heathrow

We’ve had some rough years filled with loss and trauma. We have had moments of absolute dread before our trips. It doesn’t always make sense and I hated to feel ungrateful, but the preparations seemed overwhelming. I couldn’t see past the work and worry. We’ve cried a lot. The anxiety didn’t seem worth it. I have wanted to cancel and hide. Last year, circumstances did force us to cancel a trip. We re-booked. We’ve forced ourselves past depression and fatigue and made our way to the airport and have enjoyed incredible trips which all began in that Club World lounge.

BA-Heathrow-Lounge-computers

Every convenience.

I’m not exaggerating when I swear that once I hit the lounge, I feel like a different person.

SAMSUNG

Calling mom and already smiling like fool!

I remember thinking on more than one occasion, “I don’t have to go anywhere. I could just stay here in the lounge and that would be okay”. Soft jazzy music. Squishy chairs. Moodier lighting. Flowers. A generous buffet. Clean, spacious bathrooms stocked with spa products. Contented, calm passengers plugging in their devices and kicking back. A flight delay? No problem. I will just amble over for another excellent cup of tea and a biscuit. Or two.

round lounge

Soft lighting and squishy chairs…

buffet

Spoilt for choice.

Late last year, I overheard on a lounge television that another airline’s plane also heading over the Atlantic on a similar route had been diverted due to threats. I was bonelessly reclined in a comfy chair and texted my family not to worry, it wasn’t our flight. We were flying British Airways—which, somehow, makes me feel very safe. I illogically feel that nothing bad could happen to me in the lounge. That sense of serenity continues as we board the plane.

The Club World Cabin has that “on holiday” atmosphere from the moment you enter. Robert proclaims, “This is so civilized…” every time we are seated. A flight attendant greets us as guests with champagne or orange juice and hangs up our coats.

SAMSUNG

Bon voyage!

We have our own snug little pods which recline and allow a person to stretch out and sleep. A bag of amenities makes up for the toiletries we might not have been able to take in our carry-on bags.elemis

The “party bathroom” is so large we could easily change clothes or do a little yoga. We often eat better than we do on the ground. Sometimes the chefs think the vegetarian equivalent to a decadent dessert or proper tea cakes is a fruit cup, but it’s a small quibble and no hardship. There are treats available throughout the flight.

BAfood airreview

Even a tiny tablecloth. Photo by Airreview.

We’ve seen the staff move through the cabin with remarkable patience and efficiency during some scary turbulence. We witnessed one compassionate flight attendant care for a woman who had taken ill. He then stood by her when a shockingly aggressive EMT met the plane upon landing in Los Angeles. But most flights glide through the air without incident. It feels surreal in a way. You enter, settle in, get a bit pampered and let the time pass before you exit on another continent.

I always bring a book, but rarely make any progress until after we land. The in-flight entertainment system contains so many interesting films(some so new that they haven’t yet been released in the US), television shows and music selections to keep a person entertained, that it is tempting not to sleep.

British-Airways-A380-Business-Class-36

But sleep I must so I can hit the ground running and maybe sneak past the cruel gods of jet lag. Again, I sit back and think “I don’t have to even get off the plane. I feel better just sitting here. Here…is good”. But, of course, we do get off the plane, rested, well fed, refreshed and eager to begin binging on British culture and history.

Now we have another trip on the horizon. I have, when feeling a little blue, checked at my app which shows details of the next flight. Date. Time. Club World. Smile!british-airways-app

Just over a year ago, I was on a British Airways flight, but not in Club World. I was back with the mortals in World Traveler coach class. Had I become so spoiled that this would be a nightmare of discomfort? Not at all. I had a bulkhead seat with lots of wiggle room. The attendant brought me my veggie meal although I’d hadn’t remembered to order one. It was a nice surprise to find that my preferences were in their computer system. I watched a good British film and fell sound asleep until just before landing. Except for a moment of pause over the strange man seated next to me who kept a blanket over his head for the entire flight, it was still – wonderful. It was a lovely, relaxing flight one to of my very favourite places on Earth. I sat back and counted my blessings. First of all, Mr. Blanket-head never took off his shoes…british-airways-logo

British Artists Reigned Supreme

British artists continued to dominate all areas of entertainment in 2016, enjoying success in film, television, theatre and music. Their lovely faces graced magazine covers, movie posters, red carpets, talk shows and more. Their brilliant performances have been lauded by critics and audiences alike.

This year saw another Oscar/BAFTA nominated performance by Eddie Redmayne in The Danish Girl while countryman Idris Elba pulled double duty on both the big and small screen with multi-award winning turns in Beasts of No Nation and Luther.  British icon Dame Maggie Smith continued to entertain us as the Dowager Countess on Downton Abbey while still having time to film The Lady In The Van, for which she received a Golden Globe nomination. In music, British vocal superstar, Adele, came back after a four year absence with the chart-topping hit, 25.  There hasn’t been an area where British artists haven’t reigned supreme in 2015!

Once again The Anglophile Channel, and our fans,  have a big job on our hands in choosing which artists to honor this year.

Pride & Prejudice & Zombies

“More Austen than thou…” Perhaps you have come across this type (which I shall refer to as a MATT) in the world of Jane Austen appreciation. MATTs can be exasperating, annoying, pompous and relentless. Understand, gentle reader, that I make this claim from a place not only of observation, but also of guilt.ppz13

Just watch my eyes expand several sizes as I cover my mouth and bite my tongue when anyone says Jane Austen movies rock but don’t bother reading the books.

So here is the thing about Pride & Prejudice & Zombies. I haven’t read the book. The mash-up book, that is. Pride And Prejudice was too dear to me to consider adding zombies so I had no desire to read that book.

ppz3

Um. No.

I certainly wasn’t planning to see the film. I’m not good with gore and zombies are— messy. Yet, the opportunity arose to see the film and there I sat with a pashmina at the ready to cover my face when things got gruesome. And believe me, things did get gruesome.

ppz14

At least she was polite.

But once I got over my MATT attitude, I started to let go, get over my own self, stop comparing and follow this tale to the end of the journey. It is a wild ride!

ppz scenery

Not every scene is gruesome.

Forget what you know about the Regency. Shake it off when one unmarried young lady is invited to chaperone another.

evening dagger

Elizabeth is a dangerously kick-bottom chaperone!

Try not to facepalm when confronted by many of the costumes and generous use of elastic. Don’t bang your head on the seat in front of you when Lady Catherine shows up looking like a hottie from “Black Sails”.

ppz2

Lady Catherine, I see we visit the same mantua-maker.

Stay with it when the proposal devolves into something more painful than a blow to Lizzie’s dignity. Just suspend all that and take this movie for what it is. A group of people (author, writer, producer, director, etc.) who really must love Pride and Prejudice took our beloved story gave it their own enormous twist, endowing our favorite characters with unexpected accomplishments to vanquish enemies even more menacing than Napoleon.

napoleon_bonaparte

Zombie Napoleon for the sequel?

Adding zombies to the mix raises the stakes immeasurably. Wickham holds within his power the possibility of ruining much more than reputations.

ppz8

Wickham is a badder than a bad bad boy.

Darcy is not only concerned with justice, friendship and his heart’s desire, but about saving humanity.

Lizzy is not just clever and lovely, she’s dangerous.. and a well trained survivor. Mr. Collins is still no match for her.

ppz11

Not that kind of MATT. Take him away and feed him.

It’s a zombie story. Just go to have fun. The trailers for the film looked serious and foreboding, but the film itself had a lot of comedy.

ppz6

Run zombies!

Even some of the violence was played for laughs. The Austen devotees at the screening I attended were the ones laughing the loudest at the tongue in cheek nods to the television and film adaptations.

When Mr. Darcy strips off his long black leather coat (which was a sexy costume faux pas that’s much easier to forgive) and prepares for a dip in the pond, the wink and the nudge to every Firth fan is understood.

darcy

Black leather seems to suit Mr Darcy.

There is quite a lot of humor in this vein that only Austen fans will appreciate. This film was not just funny—but suspenseful. Even if you can recite passages of Pride and Prejudice you won’t know where the next turn in this tale will take you. A few times, I caught myself forgetting to breathe. This was all a lot more fun than I had expected.

ppz10

You go, Bennet girls!

As California dance master John Hertz often tells us, “I don’t own the Regency”. None of us, as much we love her, own Jane Austen. Some avid Janeites indulge in the occasional Regency romance novel, Jane Austen mystery, fanciful sequel or updated adaptation. Why not zombies? Who knows if “Pride & Prejudice & Zombies” will lure new readers to the classic Jane Austen novel which has charmed us for generations. A hideous zombie may lead them straight to the library…and the MATTS everywhere will rejoice.lizzie book

Outlander Casts Brianna: British Actress Sophie Skelton Wins Prized Role!

#BreeWatch is officially over with the long-awaited announcement from Starz that the role of Brianna has been cast for Season Two of Outlander!

(Be prepared for spoilers below!)

IMG_5059

#BreeWatch is officially over with the casting of this British beauty!

Welcome to Sophie Skelton, who will join the outstanding cast as Brianna, the striking, redheaded daughter of Claire and Jamie Fraser. In Diana Gabaldon’s beloved books, Brianna is strong-minded and intelligent beyond her years – traits inherited from both her mother and her father – with a distinctly scholastic mind-set and a healthy dose of Fraser stubbornness.

Sophie said she is “so excited” to be joining the cast!

IMG_5066

With Skelton’s two older brothers named Sam and Roger – book readers will know of Brianna’s close connection to both Sam Heughan’s Jamie Fraser and Richard Rankin’s Roger McKenzie – it seems her casting has an amazing example of coincidence… or could it be fate?

Virtually unknown to US audiences, the 5’8’’ Skelton was born and raised in Woodford, England, UK. She has appeared in several UK television shows – including Doctors, DCI Banks, Waterloo Road, and Foyle’s War – and most recently as a lead in an episode of the BBC drama, Casualty: Forsaking All Others. A trained singer and ballet dancer, she has also performed in various stage productions, including Fiddler on the Roof, Les Miserables, and West Side Story. Upcoming roles include the title character in Ren, an online fantasy/action-adventure series, and in the feature films Another Mother’s Son and Ladybird.

The Jane Austen Evening 2016

The Jane Austen Evening

JAE2016

The Jane Austen Evening!

Saturday January twenty-third, a horde of well dressed travelers slipped through the rents in the veil of time to descend upon the Pasadena Masonic hall. That’s not entirely accurate, but in an evening of elegant make-believe you will find many willing to suspend their disbelief and plunge with immense delight into another era. Since 1998, all but one of the annual Jane Austen Evenings have filled to capacity. This past year it sold out in under five minutes. There is a high demand for a swirl around the dance floor with Mr. Darcy!

dance

Regency dancers whooping it up!

This year, there was even a second event hosted by the Victorian Tea and Dance Society the following afternoon to welcome the overflow (and those who just couldn’t get enough) to dance the same program. The Jane Austen Evening is a beautiful sight. Everyone makes an effort and the crowd seems to be positively beaming whilst navigating the dance floor in their Regency costumes. Everyone from teens to seniors make up the list infectiously enthusiastic, energetic guests.

Gang at JAE

Ready to get the party started!

This year began, as usual, with tea and entertainment. An abundant meal and several teas are provided, but guests are encouraged to bring their own tablecloths, china and centerpieces to add to the ambiance, then indulge in teatime treats with old at and new friends as a start to the evening.

Tea time at a Jane Austen Evening past.

Every year there is a different entertainment to amuse the guests. Previous years have included an Austen improv troupe, lectures, or, like this year, music of the period. There is a break between the tea and ball in which many ladies change into different gowns– not because they must but because they can! The women at this event are an incredibly kind and take turns helping each other as some gowns have tricky bits.

A Regency gown.

I can attest to the fact that not only can it be difficult to get into a Regency reproduction gown on one’s own (or even with the help of a well meaning husband), but it can sometimes be incompatible with a comfortable car ride, in which case it travels along in a garment bag. Regency wear is not required, only formal wear. Some rent costumes, but those who sew make their own delightful Regency clothes.  Many order their gowns either custom made or ready-made from costume websites or local seamstresses.
Luckily, the Regency is one of the easier eras for sewing dresses. Clothing for men is trickier, although many a lady has lured her menfolk into the Regency with the promise of some sort of military garb. Welcome, boys! Just leave your weapons outside the ballroom… I’ve seen a dagger go flying during a jig. It was scary, but no one was hurt.
militia

It wasn’t him.

Unfortunately, several of us have had some hurt feelings due to brief, unpleasant encounters with a few we name the “costume police” (or something worse), but I have, without shame, worn gowns that zip up the back made of fabrics that would baffle Mr. Tilney as well as dresses that are more authentic.

A gown from another event which would make Mr. Tilney cringe. Synthetics!

This year, I talked to one woman dancing happily in a gorgeous gown and her five-toed running shoes so as not to aggravate plantar fasciitis. We had a laugh as I hiked up my skirt to show her that I was sporting Isotoner memory foam slippers with beading. A sprained toe a few years ago forced me to wear Sketchers beneath my flowing silks. Who cares? Because, in the end, it’s all about enjoying the evening—and, of course, the dancing.

The dances for the Jane Austen Evening are called from the stage by the invariably excellent Marsden Macrae who sets the program which she varies from year to year. We always have live music and a talented contingent of costumed musicians on the stage.
This year, fans of the 1995 Pride And Prejudice were reveling in Shrewsbury Lasses better known as “Other way, Mr. Collins” as well as the one dance always on the program, Mr. Beveridge’s Maggot, during which, as you well know, Elizabeth and Darcy exhibited “such superior dancing”.
Mr. Beveridge

Mr. Beveridge’s Maggot. A silly name for a lovely dance.

Other favorites included Irish Lamentation, Ramsgate Assembly, Sally in Our Alley and Prince William. Simpler dances like Knole Park,The Collier’s Daughter and Sir Watkin’s Jig delighted beginners. Waltzes are added to the end of sets for those who are inclined to try out the scandalous dance which gained popularity in the Regency. Some of the Regency waltz holds feel awkward, but we’re game to give them a try.

Much like during the Regency, women outnumber the men. No worries! Ladies often dance together and since most Regency dances aren’t terribly clinging, we have a great time.
Manners are less reserved as it was during the Regency, and at this ball ladies will often approach a gentlemen and invite him to dance. Those of us bringing our own gentleman know that we have to share him to a degree, yet to my knowledge, no marriages have been broken up at the Jane Austen Evening by the wiles of Regency floozies.
Regency floozies

Regency floozies.

The traditional end to the dancing is Sir Roger De Coverley, the only dance Walter Nelson, the event’s founder, walks us through once from the stage and then cuts us loose. He smiles and assures everyone that it will doubtless devolve into anarchy as the band speeds up, but whatever you do, he exhorts the crowd, “JUST KEEP DANCING”! Without fail, decorum flies out the window, grace gives way to speed as it all ends in laughter and applause.
in motion

Swirling madly on the dance floor!

My husband and I began Regency dancing at a Jane Austen Evening. It seemed the natural progression for a couple of old goths who spent many years wearing out the soles of our pointy shoes on the dance floors of nightclubs with names like “Fang”. Laying on the frills for a night out was already a part of our culture. As a devout Janeite and avid Anglophile, the Regency was a world that begun tempting me decades earlier. The balls in the tv and film adaptations had me aching to step through the screen. It was time. We gathered our courage, bought tickets to the ball and headed to our first Jane Austen Evening dance practice.
hands four

Getting ready for the dance. Hands four!

The practices are taught with incredible clarity and patience by Marsden Macrae, who leads a dance group in Las Vegas but comes back every year to coach newbies as well as more advanced dancers and leads the ball. It was the perfect starting point for us as beginners. We were dancing quickly toward a hobby that encompasses as much time and as many costumes as we want to devote to it.
swirling

Just plain fun.

Dances of this period are FUN! There is a symmetry, logic and liveliness. Some dances are graceful, romantic and stately while others seem just an excuse to frolic or get silly.
the gents

The gentlemen.

Complexity varies and there is a sense of accomplishment as we progress in mastering moves like a double mirror crossover hay. We now attend many different English Country Dance balls during the course of a year, and dance with local groups at least a few times a month, but we have a special love for the Jane Austen Evening. We seem to leave troubles behind in the magic of the Regency night. We’ve also noticed that we smile an awful lot while we are whooshing around the dance floor. For that, I thank Jane.
decorum

The ladies have lost all sense of decorum!

Steven Moffat to Depart Doctor Who, Matt Smith Reacts [VIDEO]

The Whovian world was shocked when BBC announced that show-runner Steven Moffat would be handing over the keys to the TARDIS following the upcoming 10th Anniversary Season. Equally as shocking was the news that NO regular episodes would air in 2016, save for a Doctor Who Christmas Special so that they can prepare for an exciting, and no doubt, emotional goodbye season for Moffat.

In a statement released by the BBC, it was announced that the multi-award winning Steven Moffat has decided to step down as the lead writer and executive producer of Doctor Who, after six incredible series at the helm. Replacing Moffat will be Broadchurch creator, Chris Chibnall.

Steven Moffat says: “Feels odd to be talking about leaving when I’m just starting work on the scripts for season 10, but the fact is my timey-wimey is running out. While Chris is doing his last run of Broadchurch, I’ll be finishing up on the best job in the universe and keeping the TARDIS warm for him. It took a lot of gin and tonic to talk him into this, but I am beyond delighted that one of the true stars of British Television drama will be taking the Time Lord even further into the future. At the start of season 11, Chris Chibnall will become the new showrunner of Doctor Who. And I will be thrown in a skip.”

The announcement shook the Whovian world to say the least.  The Anglophile Channel’s Timey Wimey Show host, Juliette Boland, caught up with 11th Doctor, Matt Smith, who said he was ‘sad’ that Moffat was leaving adding that the award-winning producer had done so much for his career as well. He also added that Moffat “pretty much IS Doctor Who”. Watch his reaction here:

Smith said Moffat “pretty much is Doctor Who…but the show will always endure…”

Steven took over the reins of Doctor Who on Season 5 in 2010 and during his tenure the show has become a truly global success.

He has been responsible for introducing the Eleventh and the Twelfth Doctors in Smith and Peter Capaldi; as well as two companions Amy Pond (Karen Gillan) and Clara Oswald (Jenna Coleman) and iconic characters and monsters including River Song (Alex Kingston), Missy (Michelle Gomez), Rory Pond (Arthur Darvill) and the terrifying Weeping Angels. Plus, the smash hit 50th Anniversary special in 2013 which saw fans around the world celebrate the world’s longest running sci-fi series with the Doctors, Matt Smith, David Tennant and John Hurt battling the deadly Daleks in a feature length episode.

Like Steven, new show-runner, Chris Chibnall, is also a lifelong Doctor Who fan and a multi-award winning writer and executive producer. He has most recently achieved huge success with the triple BAFTA winning hit series Broadchurch, which stars 10th Doctor David Tennant.  Chris Chibnall’s debut season will launch in 2018.

Chris Chibnall said, Doctor Who is the ultimate BBC program: bold, unique, vastly entertaining, and adored all around the world.  So it’s a privilege and a joy to be the next curator of this funny, scary and emotional family drama. I’ve loved Doctor Who since I was four years old, and I’m relishing the thought of working with the exceptional team at BBC Wales to create new characters, creatures and worlds for the Doctor to explore.  Steven’s achieved the impossible by continually expanding Doctor Who’s creative ambition, while growing its global popularity. He’s been a dazzling and daring showrunner, and hearing his plans and stories for 2017, it’s clear he’ll be going out with a bang. Just to make my life difficult.”

StevenMoffatTardis

Steven’s final season will air on BBC AMERICA and BBC One but we have an excruciatingly long time to wait: Spring 2017!! But, as a bit of a consolation prize, there will be a Christmas Special in 2016.
