Tom Hiddleston, Hugh Laurie Brave The Heights of the Matterhorn!

Tom Hiddleston and Hugh Laurie have braved the height’s of the Matterhorn as filming begins on the BBC1 adaptation of The Night Manager.

Filming begins on The Night Manager

Filming begins on The Night Manager with the glorious Matterhorn as its backdrop!

Can you imagine the glorious, picturesque Swiss Alps as your work setting each day? The cast of The Night Manager certainly can as filming began for them on March 20th.   Tom Hiddleston Tweeted this photo of his ‘walk to work’ this past week….

As did his co-star, Laurie…

Simply stunning!!

This highly anticipated six-episode espionage thriller will also feature  Broadchurch’s Olivia Colman and Tom Hollander of Rev. which Colman also co-starred in. It’s a Rev. Reunion!

HollanderRev

Colman and Hollander will reunite for The Night Manager.

Described as a contemporary interpretation of le Carré’s espionage drama, ‘The Night Manager’ will bring together love, loss and revenge in a complex story of modern criminality. The series follows former British soldier Jonathan Pine (Hiddleston) as he navigates the shadowy recesses of Whitehall and Washington where an unholy alliance operates between the intelligence community and the secret arms trade. To infiltrate the inner circle of lethal arms dealer Richard Onslow Roper (Laurie), Pine must himself become a criminal.

I can’t believe this isn’t being released as a major feature film!

Night Manager is co-produced by BBC One, The Ink Factory and AMC…who will air the series in The U.S. and Canada. Hopefully at the same time as the UK~!

Lady Anglophile…ear muffs and snow hat on and ready to ascend the Matterhorn…preferably with Hiddleston! 😉

Stevens will be joining Emma Watson as Belle and Luke Evans who has just signed on to play Gaston (perfect!)  Watson even Tweeted a welcome to Evans…

Watson also recently Tweeted her excitement at tackling the Disney princess saying she’d grown up watching the famous Disney cartoon and was ready to don the yellow gown, but not before tackling singing lessons!

Emma in a Belle-esque scenario. Let the fan act begin...

Stevens, who broke hearts around the world when he left Downton Abbey at the end of season three, for greener pastures…, should be right at home in a royal role as he recently played Sir Lancelot in Night at The Museum: Secret of the Tomb.

DanStevens

No stranger to tights and a royal role…

With the success of Angelina Jolie as Maleficent and the hotly anticipated Cinderella, Disney is on a roll with the direction they’re taking by turning their classic cartoons into blockbuster live action films and we couldn’t be happier!

The all Brit cast will be directed by Bill Condon and is scheduled to begin shooting later this year.

Prince William: DAY THREE in Japan

The Duke of Cambridge was transformed into a samurai warlord when he visited the set of a long-running Japanese drama on his third day in Japan.

Smaurai William

Wearing a glittering helmet, regal red and gold tunic and carrying a replica samurai sword His Royal Highness was transformed into Toyotomi Hideyoshi, the Japanese warlord who unified his country in the 16th century, during a tour of NHK studios where the Sunday night historical drama Taiga is filmed.

Now in its 54th series, it features famous characters from Japanese history but changes the period for the action every year with the current series called Hana Moyu or Ardent Flower.

In the hair and make-up department The Duke of Cambridge dissolved into a fit of giggles when Tim Hitchens, Britain’s ambassador to Japan, put on a samurai wig.

The Duke had considered wearing the wig, made with real hair and slicked back into a tiny ponytail, but said: “If I put this on my brother would never let me forget it – I seriously can’t.”

Later the mood was more serious in NHK’s newsroom, where The Duke watched a three-minute film showing how the station covered the devastating 2011 earthquake and tsunami which triggered the meltdown at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant.

Prince William watches a video on devastating 2011 earthquake and tsunami.

He was visibly moved as he watched footage of homes, roads and cars being swept inland and fields being destroyed by the 10-metre high tidal wave.

The harrowing images were filmed by one of NHK’s 15 helicopters, which took off immediately after the earthquake and was guided by staff in the newsroom.

NHK, Japan’s Public Broadcaster, was set up in the wake of the Great Kanto Earthquake in 1923, when it was realised accurate and prompt information protects lives.

The Duke of Cambridge was also shown how NHK is alerted whenever the country experiences anything over a magnitude three tremor.

Newsreaders interrupt all of the station’s TV and radio programmes to give an emergency tsunami warning after a quake of magnitude five or more.

The warning, which is broadcast in several different languages, says: “This is a tsunami warning, please move to high ground.”

As he left the building, The Duke of Cambridge met NHK’s mascot Domo-Kun and he laughed as it bowed to him and offered his hand to shake.

The Duke told Domo: “George my son would love you. Are you hot in there? How long have they had you in there?”

Accepting a smaller, soft toy version to take home for Prince George, he added: “Thank you very much, I love it.”

The War Cemetery was constructed by the Australian War Graves Group after the Second World War and contains the graves of Commonwealth servicemen who died in Japan as prisoners of war or with the occupying forces after the war. It comprises of four main parts; the United Kingdom section, the Australian section, the Canadian and New Zealand section and the Indian Forces 1939-1945 section.

Later in the day Their Majesties the Emperor and Empress of Japan welcomed The Duke of Cambridge to luncheon at the Imperial Palace before His Imperial Highness the Crown Prince of Japan invited The Duke of Cambridge to join him for an audience.

The British Royal Family have enjoyed a warm relationship with the Imperial Family of Japan over the years, and in his speech today The Duke of Cambridge spoke of how The Queen was “deeply touched when The Emperor and Empress visited Windsor Castle in 2012 to celebrate The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee”

His Royal Highness joined the Innovation is GREAT conference where he made a speech about British and Japanese collaboration before watching video messages of collaboration and partnership between the British astronaut Tim Peake and Japanese astronaut Kimiya Yui. [See Speech Below]

Both astronauts are bound for the International Space Station this year and have a unique opportunity to encourage partnership and innovation during their missions.

The start of this symbolic partnership between the two astronauts and two countries will be marked with a sake barrel-breaking ceremony on stage. This colourful ceremony is traditionally performed at celebratory events, representing harmony and good fortune.

Another GREAT day for Prince William’s visit in Japan!

The Duke of Cambridge’s Speech at the Innovation is Great event, Tokyo, Japan

Published on 27th February 2015

Minna sama. Konichi-wa.

Thank you very much for the warm welcome.  If I may, I would like to start with a word of thanks for the very warm welcome I have received so far in Japan.

I was immensely honoured to have been received by Their Majesties The Emperor and Empress earlier today, and to have met The Crown Prince and Crown Princess afterwards.   My grandmother, The Queen, has very happy memories of her visit here in 1975, and I know that we were all deeply touched as a family when The Emperor and Empress visited Windsor Castle in 2012 to celebrate The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee, just months after His Majesty’s stay in hospital.  It was an enormously generous gesture, and hugely appreciated.

I am only sorry that Catherine and George cannot be here in Japan this time, but I know that she looks forward to visiting Japan in the future.  I know that she is following my visit here closely, and would have me pass to you all her warmest greetings.

In just 24 hours so far in Japan, I have had a chance to experience the blend of ancient and modern which so characterizes this amazing country.  I can barely think of another country on earth which pays so much reverence to its ancient customs whilst also being so outwardly modern.

Of course, the United Kingdom, too, is known as a place where the ancient and modern co-exist very comfortably alongside one another.  The United Kingdom and Japan have a great deal in common, and our links with one another go back centuries.  The first British national, Will Adams – known here as Miura (MEEURA) Anjin – arrived on Japanese shores 415 years ago, and spent the rest of his life teaching the Japanese shoguns maritime skills.  I am sure that he learned just as much from them!

As two nations, we have been learning from each other ever since. At the end of the nineteenth century, Japan imported a great wave of technology and practice from the United Kingdom, from railways to whisky.  In the second half of the twentieth century, and into this, the exchange has been more two-way.  Britain’s car, train and nuclear industries are reviving, and becoming world-beating, thanks to Japanese investment from Hitachi, Nissan and many others.  Our experiences of running the London Olympics and Paralympics are being actively shared with those here preparing for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics and Paralympics.  I have no doubt that these will be a great success.

The United Kingdom has a proud track record of giving the world life-changing products and designs – from the internet to the hypodermic syringe.  And we have a long track record of opening our doors to entrepreneurs from overseas – entrepreneurs like the three Japanese winners of the UK Tech Awards, who I am about to meet, and who will visit Britain next month to understand for themselves how their businesses can benefit from what the United Kingdom has to offer.

It’s in that spirit of collaboration and a shared history that I am proud to open the Innovation is GREAT campaign here in Tokyo.

Thank you for joining us here today.

Arigato gozaimas.

Prince William Begins Three-Day Visit to Japan

Prince William began a three-day visit to Japan today arriving at Tokyo’s Haneda International Airport. This royal visit to China and Japan is meant to promote UK relations with both countries and there is no better ambassador to do that than Prince William!

On his very first visit to the Far East, William began his visit in Japan by taking a speedboat ride to Tokyo Bay, which will play host to the 2020 Summer Olympics.

JapanWilliam1

Prince William enjoys a speedboat ride to Tokyo Bay despite the rainy weather.

His Royal Highness was met by British Ambassador Tim Hitchens and the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Governor Mr Yoichi Masuzoe who escorted him on the speedboat through Toyko harbour where he was shown where some of Toyko’s future Olympic sites will be built and passed under the city’s landmark Rainbow Bridge.

JapanWilliam2

Prince William and his Japanese hosts tour the city by speedboat.

The Duke of Cambridge disembarked at the historic Hama Rikyu Gardens where a crowd  of Japanese students and adorable school children braved the rain for a glimpse of the prince. Their excitement shone brightly as they waved British and Japanese flags.

Quite reminiscent of The Prince of Wales and The Duchess of Cornwall‘s  visit to Japan in October 2008 which was the last time a member of the royal family visited.

Teatime came for Prince William when he experienced a simple but spiritual Japanese tea ceremony to mark his first arrival to the Far East country.  The prince was served tea by a grand master who has performed the ritual for his parents The Prince and Princess of Wales, and his grandmother The Queen. What an amazing tradition!

JapanWilliam4

So beautiful that Prince William was served tea by a grand master who has performed the ritual for his parents The Prince and Princess of Wales, and his grandmother The Queen.

His Royal Highness was taken to a centuries-old Tokyo teahouse and seated at a small table where he received the green tea, said to have life-prolonging properties.

The ceremony was performed in private with The Duke joined by a few dignitaries including the Governor of Tokyo, Yoichi Masnzoe.

JapanWilliam6

Genshitsu Sen, whose ancestor laid down the philosophical ideas of chado, or Way of Tea, performed the spiritual ceremony aimed at refining the self as students seek the principles of harmony, respect, purity and tranquility.

Dr Sen made the “thin tea” or usucha with powdered green tea.

Members of the media were allowed in to see the final moments and The Duke of Cambridge drank from an antique Korean bowl cupped in both hands, at one point joking to his host: “I don’t want to drop it.”

JapanWilliam5

Prince William worried about dropping his tea cup. Not likely to happen, I say. 😉

The historical teahouse was built more than 350 years ago in Japan’s Edo period and is a traditional single-story wooden building of white paper walls and mat flooring which was restored in 1978.

A walk through the beautiful and serene Hama Rikyo Gardens which used to belong to a former Shogun and was donated by the Japanese Imperial family to the people of Tokyo in 1945. It was at this very spot that Prince Alfred, the first British Royal – actually the first European Prince – arrived in Japan in 1869 to be received as one of the country’s first VIP foreign visitors by the teenage Emperor Meiji.

I can just imagine adorable Prince George running across this bridge….

The Theory of Everything which received five nominations including Best Actor (Redmayne), Best Actress (Jones), and Best Picture.  Director, James Marsh, however did not receive a nomination for his incredible work on this film.  Always surprising when a picture receives a nod without its director.

Theory of Everything garnered 5 Oscar nods.

Also recognized is the film Mr. Turner which starred Timothy Spall, however he did not receive a nod for Best Actor despite having won Best Actor at the Cannes Film Festival.  Another British actor not making the cut was David Oyelowo for his memorable portrayal of Martin Luther King in Selma.

Mr Turner garnered 4 nominations but not one for its star, Timothy Spall.

Critically acclaimed and considered a contender for Oscar, David Oyelowo turned in a brilliant performance in Selma but did not receive an Oscar nod.

Although going into Oscar night, Redmayne seems to have the upper hand having just won the Golden Globe award it’s still anybody’s race with both thespians turning in the most brilliant performances of their career.  Knightley is nominated for the second time having first received recognition for the role of Elizabeth Bennet in Pride and Prejudice.  Rosamund Pike receives her first Oscar nomination for incredibly brave performance as Amy Dunne in Gone Girl but will have to compete opposite Felicity Jone‘s tour de force as Jane Hawking in Theory of Everything.
