Nominations Announced for The 2016 Anglophile Channel Awards

Nominations for The 2016 Anglophile Channel Awards were announced this week in Los Angeles. Leading the pack with three nominations was the powerful performances by the sexy breakout stars of the Sony Pictures/Starz original hit series, Outlander.  Caitriona Balfe nominated for Best Actress in a Television Series and Sam Heughan, with two nominations, Best Actor in a Television Series and Favorite British Artist of the Year.

Legendary film and television actress Dame Maggie Smith also received three nominations: Best Actress in a Television series for her brilliant portrayal of the Dowager Countess on the hit UK import, Downton Abbey, Best Actress in a Motion Picture for her Oscar-nominated turn in, The Lady in the Van, and Favorite British Artist of the Year.

Downton Abbey, which just wrapped its sixth and final season, garnered much attention from the TAC nominating committee and the voting audience with nods going to Joanne Froggatt, who plays loyal lady’s maid Anna Bates, and Lesley Nicol who portrays the beloved cook, Mrs. Patmore.

The stars of the BBC/PBS series, Poldark, also received nominations for Aidan Turner (Best Actor in a Television Series) and Eleanor Tomlinson (Best Actress in a Television Series). The onscreen pair turned in two of the most memorable performances on television in 2015.

Rounding out the TV nominations were performances by Richard Armitage for his chilling turn as the mass murdering Francis Dolarhyde in NBC’s Hannibal, David Tennant who pulled double duty playing the same character in Broadchurch (UK) and Gracepoint (US) and Peter Capaldi, who shined in his second season as the 12th Doctor on Doctor Who, most notably in the one-man episode, Heaven Sent.

In the film category, Eddie Redmayne was nominated for Best Actor in a Motion Picture for his Oscar-nominated performance in The Danish Girl.

Joining him in the category are: Idris Elba (Beasts of No Nation), Benedict Cumberbatch (Black Mass), Tom Hiddleston (Crimson Peak) and John Boyega (Star Wars: The Force Awakens). 

 

 

 

Joining Smith in the Best Actress in a Motion Picture category are: Helen Mirren (Trumbo), Charlotte Rampling (45 Years),  Daisy Ridley (Star Wars: The Force Awakens), Kate Winslet for her BAFTA winning performance in Steve Jobs.

Favorite British Artist of the Year nominations included two previous TAC winners: Armitage and Heughan. Joining them in the category is the popular host of CBS’s The Late, Late Show, James Corden, OBE who has come off an incredibly successful year having taken over the late night talker from Craig Ferguson and was honored by The Queen with an Order of the British Empire.  Rounding out the category is  Maggie Smith, David Tennant and Benedict Cumberbatch.

The third annual TAC Awards will be presented at a red carpet gala held at the British Consulate Residence in Los Angeles courtesy of Her Majesty’s Consul-General, Chris O’Connor, OBE

The British residence played host to Prince William and Catherine, The Duchess of Cambridge during their visit to Los Angeles in 2011.  Executive Producer and creator of The Anglophile Channel, Marlise Boland, said, “We are deeply honored by the support of Chris O’Connor and the British Consulate in lending such a historic and significant site  for the 2016 TAC Awards. A fitting location for an event that celebrates the best in British entertainment.”

 This year The Anglophile Channel announced the launch of two special awards: The first annual Alan Rickman Icon Award which will honor the memory and work of the late British actor known for his roles in Harry Potter, Love Actually, and Die Hard.  Boland commented, “Rickman has been a longtime favorite at TAC. We were all so incredibly sad to hear of his passing. We could think of no better way to honor the memory of the man and his work, than with the Alan Rickman Icon Award.”

The 2016 Python Award which honors Achievement in Comedy will also be presented. Named for the comic legends, Monty Python, who recently celebrated the 40th anniversary of Monty Python and The Holy Grail.  Honorees for both awards will be announced in April.

The TAC Awards Gala will also serve as fundraiser for charities supported by the honorees of the Alan Rickman Icon Award, Python Award and British Artist of the Year recipients.
